COVID-19 UPDATE

The COVID-19 pandemic has remained a challenge to our planning for about a year now. In view of the current COVID-19 situation and with guidelines on trends and projections from the Department of Health on movement, gathering and travel restrictions the LOC is positive that the situation will improve in the next couple of months and has therefore decided to host the 22nd Congress of the Entomological Society of Southern Africa as a Hybrid Event.

Your safety is our priority and all COVID-19 regulations and safety protocols will be observed, ensuring a safe and secure event for all our attendees. Sanitizing stations, masks, personal sanitizing wipes/spray will be freely available and the necessary social distancing regulations will be implemented throughout the event. The face to face event will also be limited to a maximum of 75 attendees.

Dear fellow Entomologists,

Every two years entomologists from around southern Africa gather to attend the Entomological Society of Southern Africa (ESSA) Congress. I therefore have the pleasure to invite you to the 22nd Biennial ESSA Congress, to be held from 28 June – 1 July 2021 at the Forever Resort Tshipise in Limpopo Province.

This is the first time that the Congress will be hosted as a hybrid event and we are excited to be changing with the time.

The congress is open to all  professionals and amateurs interested in entomology and will provide a balanced overview of advances in diverse entomological disciplines.

The main congress theme is “Insects in the Anthropocene”, and will include relevant sub-themes ranging from Insect Conservation, Integrated pest management and Conservation Biological Control, Biological control, Aquatic Entomology, Soil Biology, Taxonomy and Ethnophagy and we invite you to submit your abstract for oral or poster session by Friday 19 March 2021.

We are pleased to be announcing that our programme will be complemented with keynote speakers which will include Dr Sevgan Subramanian (International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology), Prof.  Pedro Cardoso (University of Helsinki), Prof. Erik Holm (ZZ2) and Prof. Ingo Grass (University of Hohenheim).

As a Society it is our pleasure to host national, regional, and international delegates and, together with the local organizing committee, we commit to making this another memorable event.

You are welcome to share this information with all interested parties.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Congress and to Limpopo, the warmest place to be, especially in June & July!
