STUDENT FUNDING OPPORTUNITY
As part of our goals to encourage student participation in the Society, and to foster linkages between palaeo- and neo-systematists in Southern Africa, the SASSB has obtained funding from the DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Palaeosciences to partially sponsor postgraduate student presenters at the joint SASSB / IPC conference in Stellenbosch. All students whose studies fall under the broad field of systematics are welcome to apply, but preference will be given to palaeo-systematics students.
If you wish to be considered for sponsorship, please send the following to [email protected] by 30 April 2023:
(i) proof of current registration for BSc (Hons), MSc, or PhD degree at a Southern African university);
(ii) a motivation for this sponsorship (up to one page in length);
(iii) a letter of support from your supervisor; and
(iv) your proposed abstract.
CONFERENCE TRAVEL AWARD
A R15 000 competitive conference travel award is also available to a South African registered postgraduate student or postdoc for presenting the best talk or poster at the SASSB conference. The award must be used to attend and present at an international conference of choice during 2023 or 2024. The award is fully sponsored by the Faculty of Science at Stellenbosch University and all students and postdocs will automatically be entered into the competition.
The XVI SASSB Conference will be hosted concurrently with the 14th International Polychaete Conference, and will take place at the Wallenberg Conference Centre at STIAS in the picturesque town of Stellenbosch in Cape Town, South Africa.
Stellenbosch is a university town in South Africa’s Western Cape province. It’s surrounded by the vineyards of the Cape Winelands and the mountainous nature reserves of Jonkershoek and Simonsberg. The town’s oak-shaded streets are lined with cafes, boutiques and art galleries. Cape Dutch architecture gives a sense of South Africa’s Dutch colonial history, as do the Village Museum’s period houses and gardens.
More information about travel regulations and accommodation options will be published soon.

ACCOMMODATION
A variety of accommodation options will be available soon. Options will range from hotels, guesthouses, B&B’s, and more economic hostel accommodation.

We are excited to announce that the SASSB Conference will join the 14th International Polychaete Conference (IPC) at STIAS in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
The IPC14 Conference will be hosted by Stellenbosch University and IZIKO South Africa Museum, the home of the historical Day Polychaete Collection.
The IPC14 Conference provides an excellent opportunity to exchange research ideas and findings, to meet with old friends and colleagues and to forge new relationships. This conference will bring together a gathering of world-wide polychaetologists (in the fields of taxonomy, biology, ecology, systematics, evolutionary biology, developmental biology, etc.) to share their insight into research on polychaetes, to provide a space for exchange of ideas, personal contact and interaction, and to introduce new students to the workers in this field.
As this will be the first time that the IPC will be held in Africa, we invite you to join us for this historical event in the heart of the South African winelands.
